This is the fireplace mantelpiece in our soon to be home. We would looove to update it by remodeling the surface and mantel shelf. We will either A) paint the stones andget a fancier, wider shelf.... or B) find a way to place an MDF piece over all of the stone and use some co-ordinating ceramic tiles to have around the fireplace opening (we'll be installing a fireplace insert a little later on so that we can use it!). Has anyone ever done either of these and does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? We will be placing our 40" TV above it, attached to the wall... as long as we find out it's safe to do so with the future fireplace insert..
